Research Assistant 2, RNA Center (Job 8384), minimum annual salary is $31,327, posted 01/26/09

Working under general supervision, plan and carry out laboratory projects studying yeast as a model for understanding various aspects of mRNA metabolism.

Essential functions include:

• Conduct a series of experiments to supply scientific information as part of a larger project. Experimental procedures include growing and harvesting yeast (and possibly mammalian cells), transformation of yeast, DNA and RNA extractions, RNA manipulations, gel electrophoresis, Northern blot analysis, primer extensions, sucrose gradient fractionations, PCR, RT-PCR, DNA cloning, basic recombinant DNA techniques, protein isolation and purification, Western blot analysis, and basic yeast genetic manipulations. Successful candidate will work with radioisotopes. 

• May assist in developing improved techniques, projection methods and/or procedures.

• Collect and analyze data

• Maintain certain equipment and facilities

• Train new staff; direct the work of students.

• Participate in weekly lab meetings and journal article discussions.

REQUIREMENTS

Experience 

1 to 3 years laboratory research experience in molecular biology, biochemistry and/or genetics.

Education/licensing

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a biology-related area.

Essential skills 

• Strong written, verbal and communication skills necessary. 

• Excellent organizational skills and ability to do multiple tasks simultaneously required.

Technical skills 

• General computer proficiency and willingness to learn new techniques and experimental procedures. 

• Ability to work and manipulate microorganisms preferred. 

• Molecular biology research training essential with a strong history in RNA-associated techniques preferred.
